The Eyes are the window to the rest of the body

Did you know that the eyes are the only place you can see the vascular circulation system directly without breaking skin?  Also did you know that the eyes are the input to the brain and an extension of the nervous system.

Eye doctors will often see patients experiencing a vision episode, flashing lights or spinning fans or prism like episodes suddenly lasting a few minutes.  These episodes prompt a visit to the optometrist since they are “seeing” something.  Eyes bring a picture but the brain interprets and processes the image.  If the retina is determined to be intact, the vision episode can be a vascular event and change in blood flow to the part of the brain that serves vision.  In order to rule out carotid obstructive disease or blockage to the main blood supply to the head, mini stroke(TIA), a Doppler ultrasound needs to be done.  From an eye exam and with the help of a physician, a stroke or cardiac event can be prevented.  Vision episodes can also result from optic nerve problems resulting from MS or nerve conduction problems diagnosed by brain imaging.  Eyes truly are the window to the rest of the body!

This patient shares her story! Include video clip of Joanne McNicol and carotid artery disease. This is a MUST WATCH!
